School of Hospitality Management Assistant Professor Sue Tinnish has the distinct privilege to serve as the head of the United States delegation on the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), working to develop standards for a sustainable events management system worldwide.

The ISO is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies, comprising 163 members – one from each country. ISO international standards are developed in agreement between Member Bodies. Tinnish heads the U.S. delegation and chairs a large committee of U.S.-based subject experts , and she was selected because of her work developing standards in this country, which she references in her sustainable tourism class and some of the other meeting classes she teaches in the School of Hospitality Management.

This international effort builds off a standard for a management system for meetings and events that was developed in Britain (BSI 8901). The group took that existing event management systems standard that outlined the management structure, and from there decided to create an international standard. Every country has one vote and Tinnish is the vote for the United States.

The standard will be released as Draft International Standard (DIS) in the early spring.  At that time, additional input will be directed to Tinnish as the US representative or to a member of the committee.

The standard is designed to be used for any event, from marathons to concerts to meetings. It is intended to be used for the 2012 Olympics. It is a voluntary designation and meeting planners can conduct a self-assessment or be certified by a third party.
