Beginning the summer quarter with a challenging class project to be completed within 10 weeks, School of Business Senior Lecturer Barbara McIntyre’s BUS 250 Project Management class is proud to have ended the term successfully – not only meeting the project goal but far exceeding expectations.

The requirements of the project were to plan and execute a fundraiser themed to the summer season where all proceeds are donated to a charity chosen by the class, raise at least $100 for the charity, and raise enough revenue to cover initial costs for the event.

In the course of much brainstorming and collaboration of ideas, the class put together a project charter for A Decade of Silence, commemorating September 11, 2001, a day never forgotten. The class designed and produced patriotic ribbons, posters, flyers, and baked chocolate chip cookies to encourage donations to America’s 911 Foundation. The Foundation administers a college scholarship program for children of Active First Responders (EMS, FIRE, Police) who each day place their lives on the line. As the event was planned, the class added another meaningful component to the project, which was to arrange for the Kendall College community to participate in a moment of silence to remember all those impacted by the events of 9/11.

Displaying such passion and high hopes, the class inspired the Kendall Student Housing team to join in the effort by extending the event to the residents at Presidential Towers. Together with the Student Housing team, the class raised over $300.

Along with respectfully commemorating those that were lost on September 11 and coming to appreciate the lasting impact and magnitude of the events of that day, the class also gained real-world experience in project planning including setting objectives, milestones and tasks, identifying resources, delegating roles, and overcoming constraints and limitations encountered. This is a project the class will surely remember.
